Ránki Dezső és Cristian Mandeal
Composers with alliterative names, Mozart and Mahler rarely come together in the same programme. The Budapest version of the Symphony No. 1 is a rarity in itself, and the guest performers guarantee a special evening. Crtistian Mandeal has been one of Romania’s leading conductors for decades, and has worked with celebrated soloists including Alicia de Larrocha, Radu Lupu, Yefim Bronfman, Ivo Pogorelich, Mstislav Rostropovich and Maxim Vengerov. And few musicians are better qualified to play the piano concerto – with the otherworldly slow movement – than Dezső Ránki. Now explosive, now brimming with Viennese nostalgia, now sarcastic – Mahler’s youthfully energetic symphony is performed this time with the later rejected Andante movement.
