The programme features rarely heard yet particularly exciting chamber music for wind and string instruments. “Imagine a sundial that revolves around its own immobile centre at high speeds, shooting out fiery darts,” Gubaidulina, one of the most important composers of our age once said. With references to troubadour poetry Jean Françaix’s piece is also connected to light. The “cello half” begins with a piece by a Czech composer who has developed an unmistakable style, and the other French composer of the night contrasts two wind instruments of different character with the piano. Overshadowed by Bartók and Kodály, the brilliant composer and folk music researcher Sándor Veress created music in which authentic folk music is transubstantiated just like in Bartók’s 44 duos which are wonderful study-cum-performance pieces.
